| These are my favorite black and
white pictures. I've recently started developing and printing my
own film (a very addictive habit). I can use the Vandy darkroom
for $2.50/hr, and I split it with Brandon Eames, so it's really
$1.25/hr.
All film is Ilford HP5-plus, and printed on Ilford Polychromatic II paper. I've recently developed three rolls of Ilford 100 Professional, but haven't made any prints yet (blast you Vanderbilt, for keeping the darkroom closed for 2 months!). |

| The front of Hume-Fogg Magnet School,
Nashville TN. November 13, 2001.
Negative: A 2 second exposure with f-stop 22, gives good focus, and excellent shadows. Print: only 7 seconds, with f-stop 22, and it looks just like the negative. |

| Union Station Hotel, Nashville TN.
Overexposed on this page, will do another print later (this was my first
print, ever!). The white specs are spots on the lens, not on the
negative. November 13, 2001.
Negative: A 5 second exposure, f-stop wide open to catch the shadows of the underside of the clouds. Print: Overdid this one with 15 seconds. Also, need to clean the lens. :) |

| A macro shot of the Union
Station (you can see the lit part of the tower in the wide angle shot
above). I really like the detail evident in the windows behind the
pillars.
Negative: I really overexposed this shot, as you can see from the "quickening" look around the corners, where the light is strongest. I zoomed all the way in to 150mm for this one. Print: Since I overexposed, I had to expose the paper a really really long time. I kept the f/stop on really open so as to get as much light onto the paper as possible. |

| The Tree of Knowledge (commonly, Yggdrasil).
Vanderbilt University, Library Lawn. I love this shot, even though
it's a little too contrasty. I am going to do another print of
this too, because I want to be able to see the lines of the bark on the
tree, and more whisps of cloud (which are evident on the negative).
Negative: Fully closed (22) f-stop, with about a 1 second exposure. It was very bright in the sky, which gives the excellent clouds above. Print: 7 seconds proved too much for this little booger, on f-stop 8. I'm gonna try it again with 5 seconds, f-22. |

| Another of Yggdrasil. This
looks a little funny scanned in, but the contrast doesn't
"fade" across the picture on the negative or the print.
I love the clouds.
Negative: f/22, exposed around 1 or 2 seconds with my 28mm lens. Print: I've tried dodging the tree so you can see the bark (evident on the negative) but have had no success yet. I might try with more expensive paper. |

| Don't you wish my wife would let
me take her picture more? The focus is in the mirror, but she's
also in view on the left side of the frame. Notice the other
mirror in the background.
Negative: Totally overexposed at around 1/30 of a second, f/stop all the way closed, on a 35mm lens. Print: I had to super-expose the paper to see black, but the effect is nice, I think. I think it was about 5 seconds, f/5. |

| My brother, Gabriel, at
Thanksgiving 2001. He looks thrilled, don' you think? I like
this one because his head disappears into the corner of the picture, and
the breakfront in the back (which is parallel to the ceiling in real
life) looks off kilter due to the width of the lens, not his presence as
a giant in the room.
Negative: f/8, exposed 1/15 of a second with a 35mm lens. Print: 3 seconds on f/8. |

| Mary Margaret's parents at the
Comet Grill in Green Hills Mall. This picture was shot in
November, right before we went to see Harry Potter. I love Cindy's
disinterest look out the window (in the light!) while Rick plods through
his meal. The ketchup bottle was framed in the picture on purpose,
too, but is a metaphor, not a phallic symbol.
Negative: f/16, 1/125 of a second. Print: It looks better in person, the scanner I used has consistently darkened the right half of the picture. |

| My friend Brandon Eames and his
daughter Karissa . This was taken at the ISIS
Thanksgiving party 2001. Karissa sure is a cutie!
Negative: f/2.8, exposed around 1/15 or 1/30 of a second, with my 35mm lens. Print: 2 and 1/2 seconds, f/8 |

| This is another of Karissa .
Do you think that she'll grow up to (a) hate photography, or (b) love
photography? Let's hope we don't ruin it for her.
Negative: f/2.8, exposed around 1/60 of a seconds with my 35mm lens. Print: Basic 2.5 seconds, f/8 |

| Unknown jazz dancer. This
beautiful young lady sat as part of a dual project between the dance and
photography students at VU in March 2002.
Negative: f/4, exposed at about 1/30 at ~55mm. Print: 3 1/2 contrast filter, exposed about 5 seconds on Ilford Multigrade IV. |

This beautiful young lady sat as part of a dual project between the
dance and photography students at VU in March 2002.
Negative: f/4, exposed at about 1/60 at ~55mm. Print: 3 1/2 contrast filter, exposed about 10 seconds on Ilford Multigrade IV.
